Women's Volleyball Seeks to Take Down Chris. Newport in Round 2

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) -  The Thomas More University women's volleyball team looks to keep the momentum from a 3-0 win against Pitt-Bradford in round one of the NCAA Tournament into the second round taking on Christopher Newport, who knocked the Saints out in round one last season. 

  • The Saints advanced to the second round for the sixth time in program history.
  • The last time the Saints have advanced past the first round was in 2014 then dating back to 1999, 1997, 1993, and 1992. 
  • In the first set, the Saints took a 9-2 run, hitting .872. 
  • Julia Popova hit 1.000 in the first set with five kills.
  • The Saints came back from being down 9-2 in the second set to take the 25-18 win.
  • Thomas More kept the momentum from set two into set three going up 21-5, eventually getting the 25-9 win. 
  • Popova led the game with 16 kills and zero errors, hitting .842.
  • Jenna Fessler recorded 39 assists for the game-high, along with three service aces, two kills, one dig, and two blocks.
  • Emily Mohs had the second highest on the team with 13 kills, along with one dig and one block. 
  • Jenna Mummert put up eight kills, along with one dig and three blocks. 
  • Jessica Ginn posted the game-high 19 digs, along with one service ace. 
  • The Saints had the advantage with 45-21 kills, 40-19 assists, 49-41 digs.

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT

  • Christopher Newport took down the Saints last year in the first round, 3-2. 
  • The Captains are coming off a 3-1 win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Bethany College. 
  • CNU has recorded 1,435 kills, 1,330 assists, 234 service aces, 1,784 digs, and 259.5 blocks this season. 
  • Katie Piper leads the team with 310 kills. 
  • Lauren Tracy holds the team high with 498 assists. 
  • Riley Garrison holds the team high with 129 blocks.
