(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Four Saints scored in double-figures to lead the Thomas More College women's basketball team to an 85-52 win over Bethany College tonight (Wednesday, February 1, 2012) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 16-4 overall and 12-1 in the PAC. With the loss, the Bison fall to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the PAC.
Bethany took an early 5-4 lead when Renee Shepherd made a three-pointer with 17:34 to play in the first half. Thomas More answered with an 8-2 run to take a 12-7 lead with 15:13 to play in the game when junior center Katie Kees (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) made two free-throws. Bethany responded with a 4-0 run capped by a Taylor Verrico three-pointer to cut the lead to 12-11 with 13:34 to play in the game. The Saints came right back with a 16-5 run to increase the lead to 28-16 with 5:02 to play in the opening half when sophomore guard Katie Kitchen (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a lay-up. The Bison used a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 30-28 on a Ty Harris jumper with 1:59 to play in the half. Thomas More closed out the half on a 6-0 run to take a 36-28 lead at halftime when junior guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) made a lay-up at the buzzer.
Thomas More opened the second half on a 6-2 run to extended the lead to 42-30 with 17:26 to play in the game when Kitchen made one-of-two free-throws. Bethany answered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 42-34 on a Katelynn Hackathorn jumper with 16:08 to play in the game. That would be as close as the Bison would come as Thomas More closed out the game on a 43-18 run for the 85-52 victory.
Kitchen led all scorers with 23 points, while Long added 19 and Kees and sophomore guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) each added 10. Kees led the team on the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double and Beasley led the team in assists with eight, while Kitchen led the team in steals with five.
The Saints close out their two-game home stand on Saturday (February 4) when they host Thiel College at 1 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
