Thomas More Ties Otterbein, 6-6, in Weather Shortened Game

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team played Otterbein University to a 6-6 tie today (Wednesday, May 1, 2019) as the game was called in the bottom of the 10th as lightning was spotted at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints are now 14-18-1 and the Cardinals at 18-16-1.

  • Thomas More took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as senior shortstop Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) had a two-run homerun to bring first-year third baseman Bailey Martin (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton).
  • In the second inning, sophomore left fielder Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio/LaSalle) scored on a bases-loaded walk, Martin and senior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) scored on an Otterbein fielding error and first-year second baseman Brett Benzinger (Taylor Mill, Ky./New Richmond) scored on a wild pitch.
  • Otterbein then would score a run in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth to tie the game at 6-6 and force the 10th inning.

  • Lawrence was one-for-five with a home run, two runs batted-in and a run scored.
  • Martin was one-for-four with two runs scored.
  • Benzinger was one-for-three with a RBI and a run scored.
  • Senior catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was one-for-four.
  • Reynolds was one-for-three with a triple and a run scored.

  • First-year pitcher Joey Weller (Liberty, Ind./Union County) pitched five innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on seven, while striking out two.
  • First-year pitcher Nick Muench (Florence, Ky./Boone County) pitched one inning and gave up one run (earned) on two hits, while striking out one.
  • Senior pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) pitched two innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits, while striking out one.
  • Junior pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched two innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits.

  • The Saints will return to the diamond on Friday (May 3) when they are scheduled to play Hanover College at 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
