Thomas More's Rally Falls Short in 6-4 Loss to Webster in NCAA Regional

(SAUGET, Ill.) – The eighth-seeded Thomas More College baseball team rally fell just short today (Thursday, May 17, 2018) as it fell, 6-4, to top-seeded and seventh-ranked Webster University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship's Central Regional at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 24-19 and will play fifth-seeded Franklin College tomorrow in a 10 a.m. (Central) elimination game.  With the win, the Gorlocks improve to 37-8 and will play fourth-seeded Rhodes College in a winner's bracket semifinal at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow. 

Webster took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.  The Gorlocks scored four runs in the bottom of the second to extend the lead to 5-0.  In the third inning, Webster scored one run to increase the lead to 6-0.

Thomas More cut the lead to 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning as junior first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) had a two run batted-in single scoring junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) and junior catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and then senior third baseman Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) had a RBI single scoring Lawrence.

The Saints made the score 6-4 in the eighth inning when Hauer scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder).

Lawrence led the team at the plate as he was three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored.  Senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-five.

Senior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) suffered the loss as he pitched two innings giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits.  Senior pitcher Noah Frantz (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) pitched six innings, including five shutout innings, giving up one run (earned) on four hits and struck out one.
