Saints Sweep DePauw to Clinch 22nd-Straight Winning Season

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team has clinched its 22nd-straight winning season today (Sunday, May 6, 2018) as it swept DePauw University in a non-conference doubleheader on Senior Day at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one, 5-4, and the night cap, 11-0 in five innings.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 21-17 and have clinched their 27th winning season in the last 28 seasons.  The Tigers end the season at 11-26.

In the first game, DePauw took a 3-0 last after two runs in the second and one in the third.  Thomas More answered with two runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.  The Tigers plated one run in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More won the game 5-4.

Six different Saints registered a hit in the game.  In the fourth inning, senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) scored the Saints' first run of the game and set the new Thomas More career runs scored record with his 193rd career run scored.  He broke the previous mark of 192 set by David Kennett (2010-13).

Senior pitcher Brandon Eliadis (Lawrenceburg, Ky./Anderson County) had a no-decision as he pitched two and a third innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out one.  Junior pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) earned the win as he pitched four and two-third innings and gave up one run (earned) on two hits and struck out six.

In the night cap, the Saints scored four in the first, four in the third and three in the fourth and shutout the Tigers for the 11-0 victory.

First-year pitcher Jordan Houze (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg) earned the win as he pitched three scoreless innings and only allowed two hits, while striking out one.  First-year pitcher Jonathan Sandman (Morrow, Ohio/Moeller) pitched one inning and gave up one hit, while striking out two.  Sophomore pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched the fifth and struck out one, while allowing one hit.

At the plate, five Saints had multiple hits.  Laumann was two-for-two with a triple, a double, a run batted-in and two runs scored.  Junior first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-three with a double and two runs scored.  Junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-two with a RBI and two runs scored.  Junior catcher Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with two RBI and a run scored.  Junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was two-for-two with a triple, three RBI and a run scored.

Thomas More will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania May 10-12.  The Saints will play No. 3 seed Thiel College in the opening round at 11 a.m. on Thursday (May 10).
