(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team defeated Saint Vincent College, 10-3, today (Saturday, May 5, 2018) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The nightcap of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.
With the win, the Saints improve to 19-17 overall and end the PAC regular season at 13-4. Thomas More will be the No. 2 seed in next week's PAC Championship Tournament to be played in Washington, Pennsylvania. The Saints have been the only team to qualify at the four-team tournament during their 13 seasons in the PAC. Saint Vincent falls to 14-19 overall and 10-7 in the PAC.
Thomas More scored two in the third, eight in the sixth and one on the seventh, while holding Saint Vincent to a run in the sixth and two in the ninth for the 10-3 victory.
Senior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win on the mound as he pitched seven innings giving up one run (unearned) on one hit and struck out three. Senior pitcher Noah Frantz (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) pitched two innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits.
Junior first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) led the team at the plate as he was three-for-five with a triple, a double, two runs batted-in and a run scored. Junior shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was three-for-three with a double. Senior third baseman Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-five with a run scored and junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a RBI and a run scored.
Thomas More will close out the regular season tomorrow with a non-conference doubleheader with DePauw University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
