Saints Plate 26 Runs in Sweep of Geneva

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – The Thomas More College baseball team plated 26 runs today (Saturday, April 28, 2018) as it swept Geneva College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.  The Saints won game one, 11-6, and the nightcap 15-3.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 16-16 overall and 12-4 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Golden Tornadoes fall to 18-13 overall and 6-10 in the PAC.

In the first game, Thomas More scored one in the second, two in the third, two in the fifth, five in the sixth and one in the ninth and held Geneva to one in the fourth, one in the seventh and four in the ninth for the 11-6 win.

The Saints were led a the plate by junior designated hitter Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was three-for-six with a home run, a double, two runs batted-in and a run scored.  Junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was three-for-five with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored.  Senior third baseman Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-five with a run scored.

On the mound, senior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win as he pitched eight innings giving up two runs (both earned) on 10 hits and struck out four.  First-year pitcher Braden Connor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched a third of an inning and gave up four runs (all earned) on four hits.  Sophomore pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched two-thirds of an inning and struck out one.

In the nightcap, Thomas More scored one in the second, three in the second, two in the fifth, three in the seventh, five in the eighth and one in the ninth and held the Golden Tornadoes to a run in the second, third and fifth innings for the 15-3 win.

Junior first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) led the team offensively as he was two-for-two with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored.  Junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored.  Junior catcher Tyler Harley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-five with a RBI and a two runs scored.

Senior pitcher Brandon Eliadis (Lawrenceburg, Ky./Anderson County) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out five.  Junior pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) pitched two scoreless innings and gave up only one hit, while striking out two.  First-year pitcher Andrew Schramm (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched one scoreless inning and gave up one hit, while striking out one.

Thomas More returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Hanover College in a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
