Men's Soccer Defeats Finlandia to Advance to ACAA Championship Match

(HANCOCK, Mich.) – The top-seeded Thomas More University men's soccer team defeated fourth-seeded Finlandia University, 2-1, today (Saturday, November 3, 2018) in the semifinal round of the American Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Tournament at McAfee Field in Hancock, Michigan.

  • Thomas More took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when first-year forward Mark McAulay (London, England/Tauton) scored off a cross from sophomore center Brendan Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day).
  • Finlandia tied the match at 1-1 when Edward Caballero scored unassisted in the 51st minute.
  • The Saints scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 82nd minute when sophomore defender Pierce Turner (Milford, Ohio/Milford) scored off an assist by first-year midfielder Dominic Russo (Park Hills, Ky./Covington Catholic).

  • Thomas More improves to 6-11-2 and advance to the conference championship match.
  • The Lions end the season at 1-14-1.
  • The Saints out-shot Finlandia 31-7, including 17-4 on-goal.
  • Thomas More won the battle of corner kicks, 7-0.
  • Senior goalkeeper Jeff Paulin (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) earned the win in goal as he played all 90 minutes and had three saves.
  • Jones had six shots in the match, including three on-goal.
  • McAuley took five shots, including four on-goal.
  • Senior defender Patrick Louis (Fort Thomas, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) had five shots, including two on goal.

  • Thomas More will play either second-seeded Pine Manor College or third-seeded SUNY Delhi tomorrow in the championship match of the ACAA Tournament.
  • Match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Hancock, Michigan.
