Game Preview: Football Hosts Lake Erie on Senior Day

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University football team will close out the home portion of its 2018 schedule on Saturday (November 3) when it hosts NCAA Division II member Lake Erie College.  The game will kick-off at 12 p.m. at BB&T Field.  It will also be senior day at BB&T Field and the University will honor the 11 senior football student-athletes beginning at 11:35 a.m.

THE TEAMS: Thomas More, an NCAA Division III independent, is 6-2 on the season after defeating the College of St. Scholastica, 35-0, two weeks ago in Minnesota.  Lake Erie, a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in NCAA Division II, is 0-9 after falling 40-28 to Tiffin University last Saturday.

THE COACHES: Trevor Stellman is in his first season as the head coach at Thomas More and has a 6-2 career record.  He is no stranger to the Saints as he is a 2010 graduate of Thomas More and has been a Saint assistant coach the previous eight seasons.  Gerald Hazzard is in his second full season as the head coach at Lake Erie and has a 2-21 career record. 

THE OFFFENSE
THOMAS MORE: The Saints are averaging 35.4 points per game this season.  Thomas More has 477.0 yards per game in 2018 as it has 265.6 yards per game on the ground and 211.4 yards per game passing.  Junior quarterback Justin Post is 123-of-209 passing for 1,691 yards and 16 touchdowns and also has 50 rushes for 176 yards and three touchdowns.  Senior running backs Hjavier Pitts and Luke Zajac  are splitting time at running back.  Pitts has carried the ball 172 times for 1,209 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also pulling in 22 catches for 201 yards and three touchdowns.  Zajac has 132 carries for 638 yards and six touchdowns.  Senior wide receiver Logan Winkler has 22 catches for 375 yards and three touchdowns and junior wide receiver Da'marco Canty has 18 catches for 375 yards and five touchdowns.

LAKE ERIE: In 2018, the Storm are averaging 11.8 points per game.  Lake Erie is averaging 234.9 yards per game as it has 39.7 yards per game rushing and 195.2 yards per game passing.  Senior quarterback Javarian Smith is 158-of-301 passing for 1,659 yards and nine touchdowns.  Freshman running back Xavier Pulliam has 51 carries for 200 yards and one touchdown.  Freshman wide receiver Cameron Cobb has 30 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns, while junior wide receiver Desmon Turner has 18 catches for 267 yards and four touchdowns.

THE DEFENSE
THOMAS MORE: Thomas More held its opponents to 23.6 points per game in 2018.  The Saints' opponents have rushed the ball for 106.3 yards per game and 284.4 yards passing for total of 390.6 yards per game.   Junior defensive back Thomas Williams has 63 tackles (40 solo/23 assisted) and has three forced fumbles.  First-year linebacker Peyton Van Horn has 67 tackles (42 solo/25 assisted), including seven tackles for a loss and one and a half sacks.  Junior linebacker Cody Coffey has 59 tackles (37 solo/22 assisted), including four and a half tackles for a loss and a fumble recovery.  Junior linebacker Adam Guard has 44 tackles (25 solo/19 assisted), including four tackles for a loss and one interception, while senior defensive back Steven Everson has 36 tackles (25 solo/11 assisted), including two tackles for a loss and a team-leading six interceptions.

LAKE ERIE: In 2018, the Storm have held their opponents to 46.6 points per game and 429.7 yards of total offense.  Lake Erie's opponents average 221.6 yards per game rushing and 208.1 yards per game passing.  The Storms' defense is led by graduate wide receiver Elems Ulkwu with 92 tackles (65 solo/27 assisted), including two and a half tackles for a loss.  Sophomore defensive lineman Justin Growel has 53 tackles (31 solo/22 assisted), including 13 tackles for a loss and three and a half sacks.  Freshman defensive lineman Jaylen Johnson has 50 tackles (30 solo/20 assisted), including four and a half for a loss and two sacks.  Senior linebacker Jacob Turay has 46 tackles (22 solo/24 assisted), including seven and a half for a loss and a half sack.

SERIES HISTORY: This is the first-ever meeting on the gridiron between Thomas More and Lake Erie.

DEPOSIT WINS AT BB&T FIELD: Since moving into what was called The Bank of Kentucky Field in 2008 the Saints have a 49-6 home record.  Thomas More's five losses at what is now called BB&T Field are by a combined margin of 16 points.

WINNING CULTURE: Thomas More's win over St. Scholastica two weeks ago clinched the program's 23rd winning season in 29 seasons of football at the University.
