Thomas More Falls to Wittenberg on Tuesday

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More University baseball team fell, 10-2, to Wittenberg University today (Tuesday, April 9, 2019) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints fall to 10-13 on the season and the Tigers improve to 13-8.

  • Wittenberg took a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings as it scored two in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth.
  • Thomas More cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning as sophomore left fielder Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio/LaSalle) had a sacrifice fly scoring senior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder).
  • The Tiger plated six runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 10-1.
  • Thomas More cut the lead to 10-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when first-year center fielder Leighton Schulte (Liberty, Ind./Union County) scored on a wild pitch.

  • Five Saints each had a hit in the game.
  • Schulte was one-for-two with a double and a run scored.
  • Boeckmann was one-for-two with a double and a run scored.
  • Senior shortstop Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was one-for-two with a double.

  • Sophomore pitcher Ty Grimes (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) suffered the loss as he pitched four innings giving up four runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out two.
  • First-year pitcher Justin Bierbaum (Bridgetown, Ohio/LaSalle) pitched one-third of an inning and gave up three runs (all earned).
  • First-year pitcher Austin Hoeh (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up three runs (all earned) on two hits and striking out one.
  • First-year pitcher Nick Muench (Florence, Ky./Boone County) pitched four shutout innings of relief and allowed four hits, while striking out one.

  • Thomas More returns to Thomas More Field on Thursday (April 11) for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against the University of Cincinnati-Clermont.
